Why Breakfast Matters

Our vision is that every child, regardless of family income, is ready to start the school day with a nutritious breakfast.

According to Feeding America, 1 in 4 Missouri children lives in a household that struggles with hunger. These children rely on school meals to get them through the day, making school breakfast and lunch programs vital to their success.

With support from the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), Operation Food Search is working to increase breakfast participation across the state and to showcase innovative approaches and best practices for school breakfast.

The Business Case for School Breakfast

School breakfast programs can be a revenue generator for school nutrition departments. When more students eat breakfast at school, school districts receive increased federal funding. Each meal served is reimbursed based on the student’s eligibility status (free, reduced-price, paid). Since school nutrition budgets are separate from general education funds, schools can use the additional revenue to provide more locally grown produce or a la cart menu options.
