Lucia coordinates the afterschool meals program, Afterschool ReFuel, and the Summer Meals program at Operation Food Search. As the goal of both programs is to ensure that school-aged children receive consistent and healthy meals, she is responsible for working with local schools and community centers that act as meal distribution sites and making sure kids have happy hearts and full bellies.

Before becoming a member of the OFS Child and Family Nutrition team, Lucia attended college and studied food access issues with a local environmental center in Indiana. While there, she worked in vegetable plots and within the community to collect and redistribute fresh produce to those who are food insecure. Her other areas of interest and academic research include land & food justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, and women’s rights. Lucia earned her B.A. in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Earlham College.

In her spare time, you can find Lucia playing her banjo, being outside, or frequenting a farmer’s market.

From Lucia: I believe that access to all food is a basic human right. Ensuring that children are not hungry is imperative to providing them with a happy and heathy childhood, thereby allowing them to grow into loving, content adults. Hunger and deprivation of other basic needs is at the root of many of today’s social problems, and because of this, I am so lucky and eager to help however I can!
